"Who is your style inspiration and why?" PART DEUX

Since I'm never inspired by just one thing, I've decided to include a second part of who inspires me. Well this second part is not really a 'who' but more of a 'what'.

Because my second part will be on an entire subculture:

TOKYO STREET-STYLE.
Everyone who knows me personally know I am kinda obssessed with all things Japanese. It probably started with my fixation with violent Japanese anime shows & Hello Kitty when I was six. A very strange combination, I know but who can resist Hello Kitty in all its weird,mouth-less cuteness. Plus all those Japanese anime are always so action-packed, hilarious and the storylines are always so original! & they always pay attention to all the details which makes reading their manga/watching their anime such a pleasure.

Of course, my mum always told me how amazing the country is from her trips there. It's extremely efficient, extremely clean, the people are very polite, how advanced the technology was ( maybe 10years more advanced than Singapore in the past) etc etc etc that made me always fascinated with the country. Actually, I can go as far as to say I am in love with Japan & it's culture even though I've never been there before!

When I started becoming interested in fashion, I've somehow stumbled across a Japanese street-style blog,
& I FELL IN LOVE.
To be honest, Japanese streetstyle is not exactly something everyone would accept. It's can be too wild, too colourful, sometimes too provocative & just too crazy for most people to like.
BUT I LOVE IT!
There are so many types depending on where you go.

  • Harajuku, which in my opinion, is the the place where the most fashionable & funky Japanese kids hang out because it's the shopping district
  • Daikanyama is en exclusive residential area. Expect loads of people who are loaded and are sharply dress, but it has a laid back feel to it!
  • Shibuya is where all those big-eyed,blonde curly hair "KAWAII" Japanese girls hang out at. Not my cup of tea but I have to say that these girls do know a lot about taking care of themselves and looking good.
  • Akihabara! If you watched Akihabara@Deep, you'll know it's where all the Otakus (which refers to Japanese nerds) appear. Loads of people Cosplaying,( actually, the kids cosplay EVERYWHERE), Maid Cafes & other shops related to Japanese manga/Anime. I've really wanted to visit this place because it's bound to be interesting!
  • Koenji is said to be where punk originated in Japan! & it has tons of underground clubs, bars, music records stores & music instrument stores. Kids here have the rock&roll grunge vibe! Another place I would love to visit if I go to Tokyo!!!!!

I love how Japanese are so skilled in the art of layering. Different materials + colours to create outfits that are unique to the person wearing it. Each person caught on camera is like an art piece! There are so many interesting details to look out for in every single outfit! I would love to try out some layering myself but Singapore is too hot to go beyond 3 layers without getting a heatstroke!
Plus they have this skill of wearing all these patterns, colours and textures without looking like a fool. It's like the Japanese are born with an impeccable eye for style.

The part about these Japanese kids on the street that I totally respect is their attitude and they confidence they have. They always have this look like they couldn't give a fuck about what others may think & look so cool even if they may be just wearing some really strange clothes.
Now I think that's something I wish to emulate
Less thinking & just do what I want to do. Fuck what others may think because honestly, it's not worth my time.

Love the bag, the stockings, the leather jacket...EVERYTHING!!!

Not only that, Japanese kids pay so much attention to details. The accessorize like crazy, & somehow make it work! Not just the usuals like jewelry. They pile on crazy amount of badges, funky bags, scarves, hats, hosiery...basically anything that looks cool & work, they'll wear it!I think it takes certain amount of confidence & courage to have the guts to do so

& they always look so well-groomed. Eyebrows always plucked neatly ( I'm always too lazy to get mine trimmed), hair always impeccable, skin always flawless or covered by nicely done makeup, nails always so gorgeous ( even if it's chipped, they still look good) !

Badges, soft-toys, badass studded collar as necklace(but still so adorable). & she actually pinned a lace camisole onto her skirt to give it some sort of design! CRAZY COOL!

Their devil-may-care attitude makes them look so cool even when they're dressed simply!

On days when I'm feeling particularly crazy + creative. I'll go look at some Japanese streetstyle to get inspired. & even if I'm not in the mood to dress. Just going through the photographs can actually inspire me to dress up!

I was looking forward to my Japan trip. But plans have been put on hold because of the March11 earthquake. Radiation problems in Japan would probably mean that I can only get to really visit the country which I am so in love with(but never been to) 3-5 years later when they've rebuilt and things have really settled down.
Disappointing really, but I am willing to wait! After all, given the efficiency and the resilience of the people, I'm sure that Japan will be back on it's feet in no time!
♥ ☺GO JAPAN!☺♥
